Volterra, Italy: alabaster center

From Marin headlands to Volterra? Well, it’s about 11 hours by air, but only minutes by internet. This is Italy’s alabaster capitol, and there are some wonderful carvings to be seen and purchased. Besides carved stone, there are other great artists in town. One in particular, a wonderful woman and incredible artist is Vanna Spagnolo. Check her work at http://www.colpadelvento.it/main_eng.html
Please tell her I sent you and I’m waiting for her to visit.

This town sits high on a hill all by itself. You wander the streets among the stone sided buildings, and then you come to a stairway leading up. Wow, a huge park-like area, cemetery and castle on the top of the town. Of all the places I visited in Italy, this one is my fave. It just has so much charm, much of it because of people like Vanna.
