Kayaking the Umpqua at Reedsport OR

A couple week ago I took a 2.5 mile detour to explore the Umpqua River mouth at Reedsport. I launched at Bolon Island, just off the 101. A right turn on Lower Smith River Rd and then an almost immediate turn on an unpaved road to the parking lot and launch. From there I paddled under the highway and down to Canary Island. Then I headed back under the highway and Lower Smith  to where the Smith flows into the Umpqua.  There’s an island, low with marsh vegetation and a few trees, so I paddled between it and Lower Smith Road, coming out in the Smith just below East Gardiner. I circled the island and headed back to the launch site against the tide and the wind. Next time, I’ll stay in the area, get an early start and see how far up the Smith I can go.
